Instagram Follow-to-DM not working? Here's the stable alternative
Why Follow-to-DM keeps breaking
"Follow-to-DM" (automatically messaging someone the moment they follow you) is a
gated Meta beta. There is no public follows webhook field, so most tools that claim it
rely on approvals you don't have or on polling that Meta can disable without notice. When it
stops working, it usually isn't your setup. The entry point itself was never stable.
What actually works today
Meta gives you compliant, reliable entry points that don't depend on a beta:
- Comment → private reply. The one compliant way to DM someone who never messaged you:
a private reply to their comment, once per comment, within 7 days.
- Story replies. Any reply to your story opens the 24-hour window and can fire a flow.
- Icebreakers. A configurable menu on your profile that launches a mapped flow on tap.
- New-follower welcome branch. On a first inbound message we check whether the person
already follows you and route them to a distinct "new follower" flow. It's the stable
alternative to the Follow-to-DM beta.
A concrete example
Instead of a fragile follow trigger, a fitness coach pins "Comment START" on a Reel.
Every commenter gets a private reply with a free workout, a qualifying question, and a
booking link, all on official APIs, with nothing to break.
If a feature only works "sometimes," it isn't a feature. Build your welcome on the
entry points Meta actually supports.
